The Lincoln Land women's Basketball team hosted undefeated Jefferson College at Cass Gym on Wednesday night and handed the Vikings their first lost of the season by a score of 80-60. The game was an evenly match game early with the Loggers taking a 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second half saw both teams struggle from the field. Again, the Loggers managed to out score the Vikings in the period. The halftime score was 31-28 in favor of the Loggers. "We really struggled in the first half" stated Logger Coach Chad Jones. "We looked tired and lethargic."
The second half saw the Loggers offense come alive. Sophomore Marley Smith scored two inside baskets to get things going. Avrie Schmidt and Sam Lindhorst were both on the bench with foul trouble. This prompted the Loggers to go to a matchup zone defense that Jefferson struggled to find answers to. The Loggers outscored Jeffco 25-7 in the third quarter. This proved to be more than the Vikings could overcome. The Loggers went deep in the bench in the final period. Jefferson College outscored the Loggers 25-24 in the final frame, but Lincoln Land won by a final margin of 20 points. The Loggers were lead by Marley Smith with 28 points, 11 rebounds. Smith also drew three charges on the night. Freshman Megan Harrell had another solid game scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds for the double double. Despite only playing 18 minutes due to foul trouble, Avrie Schmidt scored 20 points. Whitney Rumbold contributed 10 rebounds as well. The Loggers improve to 7-1 on the season. Jeffco suffered their first loss and falls to 5-1. Lincoln Land plays host to Black Hawk College on Saturday at Cass Gym at 1pm.
