LLCC defeats Metropolitan-Longview 26-24, 25-17, 25-13
#2 Coffeyville defeats LLCC 25-FIVE 25-18, 25-17
GAME ONE:
LLCC split two matches at the KCKCC Invitational in Kansas City Friday. In the first match, LLCC started slow, playing immediately off the bus but picked up momentum en route to a three set sweep. In the first set, LLCC built a big lead only to hit four consecutive balls long and wide to bring a tie at 19. The two teams alternated points until a Longview error gave the Loggers a 26-24 win. In the second set, solid team blocking helped the Loggers get to an early three point lead that held to 18-15 before three blocks by the duo of Ashley Melton and Kate Volk opened a six point gap with the Loggers winning on a tip-kill by freshman Mary Hill. In the third set, LLCC jumped out early behind a Melton ace and two blocks by Melton and Hill before a six-serve run by freshman Molly Ashbaugh opened a 13-point gap that never closed fewer than ten before another Mary Hill kill sealed the match 25-13. "You could tell we had bus-lag there at the start," Coach Dietz said. "The real question is how will we play in the next match since we've got to sit a couple now. Will we be focused or sluggish? Honestly, I have no idea."
GAME TWO:
In the
4pm contest which started
at 5:15, the Loggers faced off with the defending national champions, Coffeyville. Coach Dietz's fears were realized when the Red Ravens blocked three of the first four LLCC attacks and opened a 6-2 lead that became a rout
at 19-3 and included five more consecutive balls that were blocked. "You credit their blocking, for sure," Dietz said afterwards, shaking his head, "But as hitters, you have to do something when faced with a block. It's like baseball--you can't throw fastball after fastball to fastball-hitters. They tee those up and that's what happened today to us." The second set saw LLCC come out fast, building a lead of 12-5 before four straight unforced errors permitted Coffeyville to find its rhythm again, ultimately catching LLCC at 15 and breaking away to win 25-18. The third set saw more of the same with LLCC leading
until 12-11, a series of unforced errors, and a Coffeyville victory. The loss puts the Logger season record
at 11-5.
