Women’s basketball wins at the buzzer

The Lincoln Land women's basketball team played #16 ranked Lake Land College at Cass Gym on Saturday and came away with a 66-65 come from behind victory.  Lincoln Land jumped out quickly behind eight first half points by sophomore forward Katryel Clark.  The Loggers were up by as many as nine in the first quarter, but Lake Land managed to chip away and only trail by three at 19-16.  The second quarter is when things got tough for the Loggers as Lake Land went to a 3-2 zone and Lincoln Land managed to go 1-11 from the 3pt line and only scored six points in the quarter.  The usually hot shooting Loggers found themselves with wide open shots that simply wouldn't fall.  "At some point, it got in our head a bit." Stated Logger coach Chad Jones.  Lincoln Land trailed 32-25 at the half.

The second half began much where the first left off.  Lake Land hit three quick baskets and Lincoln Land was quickly down 14.  Lake Land managed to stretch their lead by as many as 22 points.  At this point, Lincoln Land went to a 2-3 zone of their own.  This started a run that allowed the Loggers to cut the lead to three at the end of the third period.  Lincoln Land trialed 47-44.

The fourth quarter again saw Lake Land extend its lead to nine, but Lincoln Land wouldn't go away.  A couple of steals and transition layups allowed Lincoln Land to cut this lead to just one point with 3:56 to go in the game.  The game was hotly contested for the last 4 minutes. With only 13 seconds to play, Lincoln Land was down two.  Lake Land had the ball and turned it over against the Logger defense.  With eleven seconds to play, the Loggers called a time out and advanced the ball up the floor.  Lincoln Land executed a play to get Katryel Clark at shot on the block, which she missed.  Sophomore point guard Havilyn Dulin, who sat most of the first half in foul trouble, got the rebound about 15 feet from the basket.  She quickly took two dribbles back and buried her only three point field goal of the game at the buzzer.  The shot gave the Loggers their one and only lead of the half.  Lincoln Land won 66-65.  "We got outplayed most of the game.  I am not sure we deserved to win based on our performance.  But our girls didn't quit.  They fought and gave themselves a chance for something crazy to happen, and it did.  The effort in the fourth quarter was great.  I'm not sure how it happened, but we managed to win."  Stated Logger coach Chad Jones.

Lincoln Land was lead in scoring by Katryel Clark with 20 points and Jolene Bueker with 10.  Clark lead the Loggers in rebounding with 12.  Hannah Wallen contributed 7 rebounds.  Lincoln Land is currently ranked #4 in the latest NJCAA poll, and improves to 15-1 on the season.  Lake Land falls to 15-2.  The Loggers travel to Ina, IL on Monday to take on division 1 foe Rend Lake College in a 5:30 tip.
