LLCC - 65
Lincoln College - 68
The Lincoln Land men's basketball team took a 65-63 lead with just under 2:00 left, but could not score again and fell 68-65 to the Lincoln College Lynx.
The Loggers started fairly strong and held the early lead. The first Lincoln Lynx lead came at 14-13. The Loggers got down by a high of 10 in the first half, however, never were put away. Lincoln Land would cut the lead down to a bucket or two, but Lincoln would push it back out to a higher single digit advantage. At half, Lincoln Land held in the game and trailed 36-31.
In the second half, Lincoln would again push their lead out, the Loggers would cut into the deficit, and again the Lynx would expand on their lead. Around half way through the second half, Lincoln Land found themselves down a game high 11 at 52-41. Lincoln Land rattled off an 11-3 run to cut the game back to a single bucket. Lincoln took a 57-52 lead, but the Loggers responded with a 7-0 run to take their first lead in nearly 30 minutes of game play. 7 buckets later, Lincoln Land trailed by 3 with :14 left. A missed Lincoln Land layup with around :06 on the clock left the Loggers scrambling to foul. Lincoln Land was unable to get another shot up before the final buzzer and fell 68-65.
"We played hard tonight, which is what I have been asking our guys to do. It got tough, and we didn't quit. When the game was on the line though, we were not able to get the one stop we needed. Moral victories don't mean anything, but this was a big step in the right direction." Head Coach Chad Jones reflected following the game.
Lincoln Land got themselves in trouble with offensive rebounds as they gave up 12, 6 in each half. Early in both halves was how Lincoln scored over half of their points, 6 of their first 11 came on second chance points, and 9 of their first 15 in the second half came via offensive rebounds. When the game was over Lincoln got and converted on one more field goal than the Loggers, which left Lincoln Land to wonder what could have been if they had secured one or two more defensive rebounds. Lincoln outbound the Loggers 37-26 on the night. However, Lincoln Land did turn the ball over 7 less times (8 to 15) which allowed them to have their chance.
Freshman Jake Pennell had a career high 17 on the evening to lead the game in scoring, including some big buckets down the stretch. The season's leading scorer, D'Aaron Owens reached double digits with 12. Two Loggers finished with 9, freshman DJ Doolin and sophomore Trace Gentry. Two more Loggers ended with 8, Sophomore Jerrid Cosby and freshman Nic Hagel.
Lincoln Land fell to 10-11 on the season and 0-4 in MWAC play. They take break from conference play to stay at home against Robert Morris Springfield on Saturday for their Homecoming game.
