The Lincoln Land Logger men's basketball team survived a thriller with multiple late lead changed, 102-101 over the Cougars of Illinois Central College.
Early in the afternoon the game looked to be headed in a totally different direction. The Loggers got the first score of the afternoon, but the Cougars got two three pointers and took the lead that they would not relinquish for a while. ICC started the afternoon scoring on 7 of their first 8 possessions and starting 5 for 5 from behind the three-point line. Before the first media timeout the Loggers were already trailing by double digits. ICC put together a total of a 19-3 run and led by a game high 18 at 25-7. The Loggers then found life, going on a 8-0 run sparked by 6 straight points from Keshaun Harlan. The Loggers found themselves in trouble a few minutes late giving up a short ICC run and again down as many as 14. Down 11 again, the Loggers put together 9 straight and the game was right back to a single point. From that point, Lincoln Land closed the half on a 9-1 run and took their first lead under 1:00 to go since the first possession of the game. Lincoln Land took a 49-45 lead in to the break.
The second half flipped the script. ICC got the first points of the second frame and then the Loggers rattled off 10 straight and found themselves up double digits. A three by Kobe Taylor with just under 12:00 to go gave Lincoln Land their largest lead at 14.To the Cougars' credit, they did not let the game get away from there here. The two teams played mostly even from that point, but ICC continued to slowly chip away. LLCC would score, but ICC would score two or three times and slowly the lead came down at the final media timeout, it was back to a one possession game. Two minutes later the Loggers had scored 7 straight and the lead was back to 10. From there the game became a slug fest with four players fouling out. Through a flurry the Cougars got 9 straight in just 1:00. The final minute brought plenty of excitement on its own. The final minute featured 12 points and four lead changes. Lincoln Land got the first two points via free throws to lead by three. ICC got a layup and immediately stole the inbounds pass and got fouled to head to the line. After sinking both, ICC lead by 1 with just :23 to play. Nate Moore took the inbounds pass straight down the floor for a contested layup to give LLCC the lead right back. The Loggers foolishly fouled a ball-handler and ICC knocked in two free throws to take the lead right back. Moore again shot down the floor, but this time was blocked at the hoop, but Jalen Ashley grabbed the ball and put it up over a defender to again give LLCC the lead. The Loggers held on the last defensive possession and after all the chaos finished with a 102-101 advantage.
The game was a season high in points for the Loggers who ended with four scorers in double digits, including two 20-point games in the same game for the first time this season. For the 7
th time this season, Keshaun Harlan eclipsed the 20-point mark, ending with a team high 23 points. Nate Moore also added in 22 points to be the other half of the first pair to score 20+ points together this season. Jalen Ahsley came off the bench to add 17, including the game winner. Mason Neumann was an enormous X factor ending with a career high 13 pints and just missing a double double ending with a team high 9 rebounds.
Lincoln Land has one final regular season game Wednesday evening at 5:30 against #14 Parkland College. The Loggers will take the chance to recognize their sophomores for their commitment to the LLCC program.
