Men’s basketball suffers another heartbreaking loss

The Loggers drop their second tough loss in a row as they fell to the visiting Warriors of Rend Lake 67-59.

Lincoln Land again played a very solid first half and for the second game in a row came out of the gates playing very soild. Freshman Nic Hagel led an early charge getting 11 first half points, for the second game in a row. The Loggers controlled most of the half, holding a lead between 5-12 points all the way from the third possession of the game. With :18 left in the half they led the Warriors by a high of 12 in that first half. In the first half the Loggers outpaced Rend Lake with solid shooting and ball control. LLCC assisted on 12 of 15 made field goals and turned the ball over two less times than Rend Lake (7 to 9). Those stats equated to a 40-30 advantage at the half for Lincoln Land.

Those advantage disappeared in the second half. Lincoln Land shot a dismal 25% from the field, committed 12 turnovers, and got only 5 assists. A key to Rend Lake gaining control of the game was rebounding as they pulled down 10 offensive rebounds, 8 of which came from Delvonte McCloud. When it came down to key plays, Lincoln Land had too many turnovers that resulted in immediate buckets for Rend Lake. Lincoln Land was only able to get 19 second half points.

Taking all that into consideration, Lincoln Land led the entire game until just over 2:00 remaining. Rend Lake and the Loggers traded buckets for a few possessions and an open three point attempt to tie it late by Lincoln Land went wide and resulted in the Loggers having to foul. Rend Lake made free throws and got one more steal and bucket to secure their 67-59 victory.

"We played with no passion down the stretch. We lost the other night late in the game and I feel like as Rend Lake closed in we felt like we had already lost. We played well enough to win this game for 38 minutes, but in that last two minutes just could not get the stops and scores we needed. This makes our next game the biggest of the year so far, because we have to avoid going in to break on a three game losing streak." Reflected a frustrated Chad Jones following the loss.

Lincoln Land, now 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in Region 24 play, were led in scoring by freshman DJ Doolin who had a career high, for the second game in a row, with 14 points. Doolin also pulled in a game high 15 rebounds, while also getting 3 assists and steals each. Hagel and sophomore D'Aaron Owens had 11 each.
