Men's Basketball drops heartbreaker in final seconds

Bennell led Loggers in scoring
The Lincoln Land men's basketball team dropped a heart breaker to NJCAA D1 Lake Land College 78-76.

Lincoln Land broke out of the gates fast and raced out to a 20-8 lead forcing two early Lake Land time outs. Lake Land was able to chip away and took their first lead of the game almost half way through the first half. Lincoln Land quickly recovered and held onto the lead for the next 25 minutes of the game. Lake Land got two late buckets right before half to cut into their deficit and trailed the Loggers 38-34 at half. The Logger quick start was sparked by four major contributors freshman Nic Hagel and DJ Doolin led the way in scoring, putting in 11 and 9 respectively. Sophomore Jerrid Cosby added in 8 points and 5 rebounds while sophomore D'Aaron Owens controlled the game and dished out 5 first half assists.

The second half saw the Loggers hold a strong lead for most of the half. At its height the Lincoln Land lead was as high as 13. Lake Land chipped away and forced 12 second half LLCC turnovers to take a lead with 4:50 left in the game. However, that lead lasted for two possessions as Lincoln Land put together two stops and scores to get back in front. With 1:19 to go in the game, Lincoln Land held a 76-70 advantage and forced a Lake Land miss. However, the Lakers pulled in an offensive rebound and scored. On the next possession Lake Land forced a quick turnover that led to an easy basket to cut the game to 76-74. The Loggers were now in the position of needing a score in the last :30 to seal the victory. Lincoln Land was unable to get that needed point. The Lakers got the stop, scored and tied the game at 76. Lincoln Land had two free throws with :12 left and unfortunately missed both. Lake Land pushed up the floor and got a contested lay-up with :2.6 left. A three quarter court heave fell short and Lincoln Land fell 78-76.

"This is a really tough loss. In a lot of ways, this was our best game of the season, but it still ended in a loss and it is easy to look back and think of missed lay-ups and careless turnovers that cost us the game. We had three point guards on the floor and still gave Lake Land too many easy buckets off of steals. I felt like we did a solid job of stopping them in the half court, but we gave them 12 second chances on offensive rebounds, and gave them probably 6-8 uncontested lay ups off of turnovers. We played well, but did not make the one or two plays late that we needed to win and that ends our night in disappointment." - Head Coach Chad Jones

The Loggers led nearly every statistical category on the evening, but Lake Land forced 5 more turnovers and were able to get 16 more shots than the Loggers. Lincoln Land had very balanced scoring as they had 6 players in double digits. Freshman Jake Pennell scored a career and team high of 14 for the night. Hagel ended with 13, Doolin with 12, sophomore Trace Gentry and Owens with 11 each, and Jerrid Cosby with 10.

Lincoln Land falls to 7-3 on the season after their third loss in four games. Rend Lake comes to Cass Gymnasium on Saturday to try to avenge their 63-57 earlier season loss to the Loggers.
