LLCC fell to Kirkwood in five sets, falling short in the comeback after being down two sets to none. The Loggers were led by Brenna Perinar who put together her best match of the season with two blocks, 16 kills, 30 digs, and 2 aces while Izzy Carroll contributed another 24 digs. "I sound like a broken record, but the key issue were our errors," Coach Dietz said. In the first game, five unforced errors gave Kirkwood a quick 6-1 lead while two runs of four errors cost the Loggers in game two, including a run of three errors after having taken a 23-22 lead. "Kirkwood's a top program and they were coming off a match where they'd just been upset, so they came out hard from the start. You can't give top teams point after point. Ultimately, it's been our ranking that's hurt us--we've had a lot of 'Hey, we're #4, so we're great, we don't have to work hard' going on, and that is troubling. Though we have one more match today, that attitude, that's going to get fixed in practice this week."
It didn't take long for the Loggers to fix the attitude of being #4 as they dominated Jackson from start to finish in the final Saturday match at the Parkland Invitational, winning 25-8, 25-10, 25-12 against a squad that earlier defeated SWIC (receiving votes in the poll) and took a game from #14 Illinois Central. The Loggers were never challenged in the match, building a 20-2 lead in game one and a 17-3 lead in game two. Game three was tied at 9 before LLCC exploded on a ten point run. "I'm glad we came out hard and played hard throughout. The match was delayed because of so many previous matches being close, and that's hard to work through sometimes. We still have to fix our streaks of errors that cost us earlier today, but at least we are a team that doesn't quit--that you have to be ready to play against us from start to finish."
