The #3 seed Lincoln Land Loggers women's basketball team played in the fifth place game at the NJCAA National Championships and defeated the #7 seed Lakers of Lakeland College 76-61. This was the fourth matchup of the year between the two teams. Lincoln Land had won both previous games at Cass Gym on their home floor, but lost by two points in overtime at Lakeland in mid-January. The Loggers started out slow in the contest and found themselves down ten points early. Lakeland was easily getting to the basket on the Loggers defense. Lincoln Land was down six at the end of the period. The second quarter saw the Loggers start to find rhythm offensively. Lincoln Land got hot from behind the three point line with sophomore Durbin Thomas hitting two shots from deep in the period. The Loggers defense stepped up big as well and Lincoln Land out scored the Lakers 27-11 in the period. Lincoln Land led 37-27 at the half.
The second half saw Lakeland cut the lead to just one point behind deep shooting of their own. Megan Harrell, who sat much of the third quarter in foul trouble, came back into the game to spark the Loggers. Harrell scored back to back baskets and was fouled twice in the period. The Lakers did manage to out score the Loggers by three in the period. Lincoln Land led 54-47 at the end of three quarters. The final period saw the Loggers take control with Sam Lindhorst, a Northern Kentucky commit, scoring on strong drives to the basket and getting to the foul line. Durbin Thomas, an Indiana Tech commit added another three, and the Loggers slowly pulled away. Lincoln Land won by a final margin of 76-61 and claimed 5th place in the nation.
Lincoln Land was led in scoring by Sam Lindhorst who poured in 21 points. Megan Harrell, who was named to the all tournament team, scored 20. Durbin Thomas scored 15 while making four three point baskets in the game. Harrell once again led the Loggers in rebounding with eight. Lindhorst pulled down six in addition to dishing out seven assists. The Loggers managed to turn the ball over just seven times in the game. Point guard Durbin Thomas logged 38 minutes without a turnover. Lincoln Land forced 15 Lakeland turnovers that led to 21 points off of turnovers.
The Loggers had a record setting year going 34-3. This season included an MWAC championship, NJCAA Region 24 and Central District Championships, and a 16 game win streak. The Loggers didn't lose a game on their home court. "I can't tell you what this class of sophomores has meant to this team. Sam, Durbin, Whitney, Megan, Elynn, and Lex have set a really high standard here. Both on and off the court, they have been tremendous" said Loggers coach Chad Jones.
