Women's Basketball

Loggers Advance to Championship

The Lincoln Land women's basketball team defeated the Lakers of Lake Land in the Region 24 semifinal by a score of 62-50.  The two teams split the regular season match ups. In what was one of the more exciting games of the year, Lincoln Land and Lake Land were so evenly matched with both teams traded blows most of the game.  The first quarter was an 11-11 stale mate.  The second  quarter was much of the same, however, Lake Land managed a two point half time lead at 26-24.   The first half saw Marley Smith and Sam Lindhorst both on the bench for most of the second quarter with two fouls apiece.  Avrie Schmidt carried the Loggers in the first half scoring nine points.
The third quarter was much of the same with neither team getting separation.  Lake Land did manage to extend their lead to eight with 3:27 to go in the third quarter and forced a Logger timeout.  Lincoln Land would battle back and eventually take a two-point lead with about eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter.  This lead was short lived as Lake Land quickly scored twice to take the Lead back.  With the game tied and approximately five minutes to go, the Logger defense came up clutch.  The Loggers scored a quick bucket and then managed two steals and two quick scores.  The Loggers then began to extend their lead both by getting stops and scores.  The game featured 12 ties and 9 lead changes. "It's always a battle when we play them, The are so good at running their stuff, you can never relax" said Logger coach Chad Jones.  Lincoln Land would make free throws down the stretch that made the score look more comfortable than it really was.

The Loggers were lead in scoring by Megan Harrell who poured in 22 points, 17 of which were in the second half.  Avrie Schmidt contributed 13.  Sophomore Marley Smith scored 15.  With Smith's 15 points she eclipsed the 1000 point mark in her career at Lincoln Land.  "A thousand points is a lot" stated Jones.  "I'm super proud of here." Three Loggers pulled down eight rebounds each,  Durbin Thomas, Megan Harrell, and Whitney Rumbold.  Lincoln Land improves to 26-6 on the season and will play Parkland College tomorrow at 2pm in Cass Gym for the Region 24 Championship against #1 seed Parkland College.  The two team split the regular season matchups.
