Smith Powers Loggers to Victory

The #14 ranked Lincoln Land women's team played host to the Jaguars of Danville in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 24 women's basketball tournament and won 65-54.  The Loggers and the Jaguars just played three days ago and the Loggers won by a resounding 29 points. "I knew tonight would be different.  Playing the same team back to back is never what you want in March" said coach Chad Jones.  The first quarter was Lincoln Lands worst nightmare.  The Jaguars were on fire and Lincoln Land struggled to score.  Danville shot 57% from the field and 67% from the 3pt line in the period.  Lincoln Land on the other hand shot 27% from the field and 18% from the three point line.  Lincoln Land trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. Just three days ago, the Loggers managed to score 34 points in the first period of the previous game. The second quarter was evenly matched with the Loggers being down 34-29 at the half. "We just needed to survive the first half" said Jones.

The second half saw the Loggers become aggressive and move the ball rapidly against the zone of Danville.  Lincoln Land managed to out score Danville 25-7 in the period.  The Loggers connected on 11 of their 17 shots in the period. "We were able to get the ball moving and get Marley and Megan the ball in the post.  Both of the got aggressive and physical in the second half" said Jones.  The final period saw Danville out score the Loggers by two points, but that wasn't enough.  Lincoln Land won 65-54 to advance to the second round.

Sophomore forward Marley Smith had a huge night for the Loggers scoring 26 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. "Marley just went after the ball in the second half tonight.  She's scary when she does that" said assistant coach Gary Albert.  Avrie Schmidt was the only other Logger in double figures with 12 points.  Megan Harrell led the Loggers with 9 assists on the night.  Lincoln Land improves to 25-6 and will play Lake Land College on Saturday at Cass Gym in the semifinal round of the Region Tournament.  Lake Land and Lincoln Land split in the regular season with each team winning on their home court.
