The Lincoln Land Loggers men's basketball team kicked off their season, but stumbled early on the way to an opening afternoon loss, 84-62, to the Lakers of Lake Land College.
The difference in the game took place in the opening minutes of the contest as it took the Loggers over 4:00 minutes to get their first points on the board and by that time the Lakers had already poured in 19 to build their advantage. Lake Land led by 21 at 30-9 just under halfway through the first half. At that point the Loggers shook off some rust and found their groove. Lincoln Land went on a 23-5 run and found themselves down just one bucket at 35-32 with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Lakers were able to stop the LLCC run and put some room between the two teams and closed the half strong to go into halftime with the lead. At the break Lake Land led 45-36.
Lincoln Land found themselves down double digits fairly quickly in the second frame and the lead just slowly continued to build for the Lakers. Lake Land turned a 10 point advantage to 15, then built it to 20. The Logger disadvantage stabilized around 20 as the two teams played fairly evenly over the last 8:00 of the game. At the final buzzer the Loggers were on the wrong side of the 84-62 score.
Ten Loggers scored on the afternoon, but only one got into double digits. AJ Tillman Jr. led the team with 12 points.
The Loggers fall to 0-1 to start the year, but have a quick turnaround as they head to Galesburg on Election Night Tuesday to take on Carl Sandburg.
