The #8 ranked Lincoln Land women's basketball team played host to NJCAA Division 1 Olney Central College at Cass Gym and won 69-58.
The Loggers started the game slowly and had trouble scoring going one for their first seven field goal attempts. Fortunately, during this time, the Logger defense held steady and managed to keep the game at a near draw ending the quarter up 13-12. Things heated up the second quarter for the Loggers as freshman Marley Smith scored six points in the period and pulled down three timely rebounds. Lincoln Land out scored Olney 19-9 in the period.
"Our press managed to speed the game up and get us a couple of easy baskets. This allowed us to then get Marley some easy touches deep in the paint. She made the most of them" stated Logger's Head Coach, Chad Jones.
The second half started fast for both teams as they combined for 48 points in the period. Lincoln Land managed to outscore Olney by two in the period and slightly extended their lead. During this time, starters Elynn Peterson and Cassidy Kretschmer spent most of the period on the bench with foul trouble. The Loggers opened the fourth quarter with a flurry and extended their lead to 21 points with 5:22 to go in the game. Olney would score 10 of their 14 fourth quarter points in the last three minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough, and the Loggers held on for the victory.Â
The Loggers were lead in scoring by Marley Smith, with 22 points and followed by Addison Scarlette, with 13 points. Smith went 7 of 9 from the field in the game. Sophie Bedel lead the Loggers in rebounding with six, while Scarlette, Kretschmer, and Smith all pulled down five boards apiece. Elynn Peterson managed to scoop up five steals in the game.
The Loggers improve their record to 6-0 on the season and will travel to Bloomington, Illinois on Thursday to take on Illinois Wesleyan University.
