Loggers men's basketball suffer third straight close defeat

LLCC - 81
Illinois Valley Community College - 87

Yet again a hot start and great first half can not propel Lincoln Land to a victory. Lincoln Land dominated the early minute of the game leading by a game high of 16. The Loggers were able to race out to a 9-0 lead and did not relinquish that lead until 4:45 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Trace Gentry led the early charge for Lincoln Land. Gentry went 6 for 10 from behind the arc in the first half to give him a first half game high of 18 points. In the last three games Lincoln Land has outscored opponents by 26 points combined.

Second halves have proved different stories. Tonight followed that trend. Lincoln Land scored at a better rate than the past two, but still failed to get enough stops to be victorious. Although the Loggers struggled to score they still held the lead all the way until just over 4:00 remaining in regulation. The Loggers did have a wide open chance in the closing seconds, but the shot came up short. A big three by the Eagles in overtime gave Illinois Valley an advantage that the Loggers were unable to overcome.

"This is our third game in a row that we have given away with late mistakes and inability to score. Three losses are always disappointing, but the way we have lost these last three have been even worse. We have to learn to make the plays late that seal these victories, not give them away." Stated Head Coach Chad Jones following the loss.

Gentry led the Loggers with a career high 23. Sophomores D'Aaron Owens added 19 and sophomore Jerrid Cosby ended with 14. A bright spot was that the Loggers assisted on 23 of their 31 made field goals. However, getting outshot from the free throw line (26 makes to 7), committed one more turnover, and being out rebounded by 9 doomed the Loggers.

Lincoln Land, now 7-5, ends their first semester schedule traveling to St. Louis to take on St. Louis Community College Tuesday evening.
