D2 #3 LLCC defeats D1 Lake Land 19-25, 27-25, 25-22, 26-24
LLCC defeated Lake Land in a close match
Friday night to open its Labor Day weekend home tournament, taking the final three sets after squandering a 17-13 lead in the first set. Every one of the sets was a back-and-forth affair until at least 6-6. In the first set, LLCC opened a 17-13 lead behind the hitting of Erika Miller before permitting the Lakers to score 11 consecutive points, 7 on unforced errors by the Loggers.
LLCC looked set for a repeat in the second frame, taking a 14-9 lead before letting Lake Land go on a 9-2 run. Two setter-dumps by Lainey Jackson righted the ship and brought the game to 20-18 before Lake Land scored four straight. Eventually, LLCC finished off Lake Land with a kill and thundering solo-block by freshman Ashley Melton.
The third set alternated points to 13-13 and was tied even as late as 22-22 before the Loggers put the set away behind sophomore Delaney Edwards' swings while the deciding set didn't see a lead of more than two points until LLCC pulled out to 20-16. Lake Land came back and tied it at 24 after three LLCC errors, though the Loggers held on for the final two balls and a 26-24 win.
LLCC hit at a season-best .336 clip and tallied 9 blocks in the effort. The Loggers are back in action tomorrow at 9am.
