Loggers Outlast Trailblazers
Â
It took eleven innings but the Loggers won in comeback fashion on Saturday winning 6-5 in the first game of a four game weekend set against the Lewis Clark Community College Trailblazers.
Â
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Lincoln Land plated three runs to knot the score and force extra innings. After a scoreless tenth inning, the Loggers walked off in the
Nick Maton
bottom of the eleventh when Logger's right fielder Aaron Steinhoff (2 for 5) drove in Michael Ryan from third base with the infield drawn in.Â
Â
Logger highlights in game one included a Nick Maton triple and two hits a piece from Xavier Collier (2 for 3) and CJ Fleming (2 for 3, 2B). Carson Armsbury threw three scoreless innings in relief of starter Devin Smith, keeping the Loggers within striking distance, and Maton (3-1) earned the win, pitching two scoreless frames to end the game.Â
Â
Lincoln Land scored three runs in the first two innings, but it was a four run fourth inning that essentially sealed the deal in game two, as the Loggers would go on to win 8-5.
Â
Noah Powless, Peyton Minder, and Nick Maton all belted doubles for the Loggers and Maton hammered his eighth homerun of the season, a three run shot in the fourth. Maton finished with four runs batted in and CJ Fleming added two hits, finishing his day 4 for 6.
Â
Jack Staten (2-0) got the win on the mound for LLCC. Staten pitched 1.33 innings in relief, allowing two earned runs on two hits. Noah Kesselmayer hurled a scoreless seventh inning for his third save of the season.
Â
"Proud of the way the guys battled back in game one," Coach Riggle said after the games Saturday. " We were down three with only three outs to work with, and we found a way to win. The season is winding down, and every conference win down the stretch is huge in earning a top seed in the regional tourney. Very fortunate to walk away with two today."
Â
Lincoln Land is now 32-8 overall and 19-7 in the MWAC conference. The series with Lewis and Clark will resume tomorrow in a double header in Godfrey, Illinois. Game one is scheduled to start at 1pm.
