Bryce Meyer Gets the Win
The Loggers recovered from an early 4-1 deficit by battling back to beat the Patriots from Central Florida College 7-6. Lincoln Land scored a single run in the top of the first when Nick Maton (2 for 4, RBI) doubled to left center, and eventually scored on a two base throwing error by the center fielder. The lead did not last, as Logger starter Matt Steinhoff surrendered four runs in the bottom half of the inning when the Patriots sent 10 hitters to the plate, taking a 4-1 lead. Steinhoff settled down, following the rough first with three consecutive scoreless innings to keep Lincoln Land in the game.
The Loggers chipped away by scoring a run in the second and another in the third on Maton's solo homerun. With the score 4-3, Central Florida struck again in the bottom of the fifth by plating two runs, only one earned, to chase Steinhoff out of the game. Matt finished the day with five innings of work, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, three walks and two strike outs.
Down 6-3 in the top of the sixth, the Loggers fought from behind once again by scoring two runs to keep the game close. With two outs and the bases loaded, Logger left fielder Jonathan Walder (1 for 3, RBI) and catcher Micheal Ryan drew back to back walks to put Lincoln Land within a run of tying the game.
In the top of the seventh, the Loggers again rallied with two outs to score two runs to take a 7-6 lead. First baseball Austin Deal (1 for 4) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Dalton Fletcher's (3 for 4) sac bunt. After Sam Anderson flew out to center field for the second out, leadoff man Rick Dour tied the game with a two strike single to center that scored Deal. Second baseman Xavier Collier (1 for 4, RBI) followed with a triple to the right field corner to score Dour all the way from first, giving the Loggers the lead for good.
Lincoln Land freshman lefty Bryce Meyer (1-0) made is college debut and did so in style. Meyer earned the win by hurling four shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out six Patriots. Lincoln Land finished with eleven hits in the game, highlighted by Fletcher's three hit performance that included a double off the left field wall.
"I'm proud of the way we battled back today," Coach Riggle said after the game. " Matt kept us in the ballgame after a rough and unlucky first inning and the offense picked him up. Then Meyer came in a shut the door, it was an all around good game of baseball."
Lincoln Land is now 6-1, 4-1 on their current Florida trip. The Loggers will be off on Wednesday but will resume action on Thursday, March 9 against Webber International University
