Loggers split with DACC

The Logger baseball team traveled to Danville Sunday to finish their annual four game conference set with the Jaguars from Danville Area Community College. LLCC escaped with with a 2-1 win in the second game of the double header to win the series three games to one. Lincoln Land, now 16-3 on the season and 6-2 in the MWAC, lost game one 3-2.

Matt Steinhoff (0-1) suffered the tough loss in game one, pitching six strong innings, allowing three runs, only two earned, on six hits and two walks. Danville took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Danville left fielder Carson Davis led off with a solo homerun, his second of the series. Third baseman Mark Strebin followed with a double to left and scored on a squeeze bunt from catcher Cody Smith. The Jaguars got their third run, what turned out to be the winning run, in the fifth inning when leadoff man Tye Thixton singled home Matt Wolf with two outs. The run was unearned due to a two base throwing error in the inning that moved Wolf to third base with two outs.

The Loggers outhit the Jaguars 8-6, but came up short of runs in the end. They got on the board with their first run in the top of the fourth when Aaron Steinhoff doubled in Michael Ryan (2 for 3) to cut the lead in half. The offense went silent until the seventh when they plated their second run on Austin Deal's run scoring single making the score 3-2. With one out, Danville pitcher Tyler Lunger struck out Daulton Fletcher and pinch hitter Johnathan Walder to end the game.

Lincoln Land rebounded in game two to take the series. Starting pitcher Rick Dour and reliever Nick Maton kept the Danville offense at bay. Dour went four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, one walk, and struck out two. Maton (2-0) earned the win with his three innings of work, allowing one unearned run on one hit and two strikeouts.

Lincoln Land scored the go ahead and game winning run in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitting for catcher Clay Bachman, Michael Ryan led off the inning with a single up the middle. Ryan ended up on third from an errant pickoff throw, setting the stage for pinch hitter Noah Powless, who singled up the middle with the infield drawn in to give LLCC the 2-1 lead. Daulton Fletcher was the only Logger with multiple hits, he was 2 for 3 with a double.

"Two good games today, happy we got that second one to win the series," coach Riggle said after the games Sunday. " Had some opportunities in the first game and didn't get the big hit, but got what we needed in game two, Noah came up big there for us."

Lincoln Land will take on fifth ranked Parkland next weekend. The four game series in scheduled to begin next Saturday, April 1st in Champaign, IL at 1:00pm.
