Heartland Beats LLCC 4-3 in Regional Tourney

The third seed Lincoln Land Loggers continued their postseason play on Friday taking on second seeded Heartland in the winners bracket of the Region XXIV Tournament.  The game featured a rematch of pitching aces, Lincoln Lands's Ben Hecht (9-2) and Heartland's Colin Holderman (9-1).

The Loggers struck first in the top of the second taking a 1-0 lead.  Xavier Collier drew a one out walk and advanced to second on Michael Ryan's single.  Peyton Minder followed with a single to drive in the game's first run.

Heartland took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs.  Hawk's second baseman Myles Hann led the inning off with a single.  Ben Hecht got two quick outs before surrendering a walk to third baseman Mitch Ellis turning the batting over order.  Lead off man Marcus Pingleton and shortstop Collin Ridout ripped back to back doubles to give Heartland a 3-1 lead.

Lincoln Land fought back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Tyler Ring walked to lead off the inning and Conor White (2 for 4) triple him home.  Hecht, hitting for himself, filled with a single to center to knot the score.  The Loggers had a chance to take the lead, but Hecht was throw out at home trying to score on Micheal Ryan's ground ball.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Heartland took a 4-3 lead.  Holderman, also hitting for himself, led with a lead off walk. Hecht got two ground ball outs, advancing Holderman to second.  Hawk left fielder Connor Sorge hit a two strike two out single to score the games winning run.

Ben Hecht would suffer the loss, his third of the year.  He pitched all eight innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits, five walks, and he struck out nine.  Holderman finished the game with a no decision, pitching seven strong innings.  He gave up all three Loggers runs on five hits, four walks, and struck out three.  Relief pitcher Tyler Hutchinson (1-2) picked up the win for Heartland, his first of the season.  He threw two scoreless innings, walked one and struck out one.

Lincoln Land fell to the losers bracket and will await their opponent, the winner of John Wood Community College and Danville Area Community College.  That game will be at 3:00pm Saturday afternoon at LLCC.
