Parkland - 75 Lincoln Land saw their season come to an end during the Region 24 tournament at the hands of the 2 seed Parkland, 75-65.
Lincoln Land came out with a strong showing in the first half, and in the closing minutes of the first half Lincoln Land held a 5 point advantage. However, Parkland closed on a 9-1 run and took a 3 point lead in to the half. The second half was a continuation of that run. Parkland slowly built a lead on the Loggers, who struggled most of the day from the field. Parkland got ahead by as many as 21. Lincoln Land was able to make a small run and briefly cut the lead to single digits. However, the Loggers were unable to get any closer.
"Tonight closed a disappointing season. We were right there in so many games, but just made too many errors to get over the hump to victory. That same thing happened tonight. Our freshmen played well and that is a great sign for our future. I am proud of the people our players are and proud to have been able to coach them this season," commented coach Chad Jones following the close of the season.
Freshman Eddie Longmeyer led all scorers for the day with 25. He also tied for the team lead with 6 rebounds. He was joined in rebounds by sophomore Justin Thomas and fellow freshman Edin "Dino" Mehmedovic. Mehmedovic also chipped in 19 points. The freshmen accounted for 80% of the Loggers' scoring. Lincoln Land was out-rebounded 41-27 and was outshot on all aspects of the floor.
Tonight marked the end of the junior college careers of sophomores Derek Smith of Teutopolis, Michael Cameron of Pleasant Plains, Justin Thomas of Whitfield (Missouri), Corey Evak of Plainfield, Jake Stombaugh of Effingham and Brett Irwin of New Berlin.
Lincoln Land ended the year at 14-17 and 0-11 in conference games.
In other games:Lincoln College defeated Rend Lake 89-69 behind 22 points from Lincoln native Edward Bowlby.
In the final game of the evening, Danville Area Community College defeated Illinois Central College in a tight 63-61 battle. Trey Dorsey of ICC lead scorers in the game with 23.
