Men's Soccer began its competitive schedule today in Overland Park, Kansas. The Loggers took on #20 ranked Johnson County Community College. The Cavaliers and the Loggers played even after regulation play before the LLCC falling to Johnson County in OT, 3-2.
LLCC managed to put the first few shots on goal without success. Ten minutes into the game, Johnson County took control and scored first. The Cavaliers maintained the majority of the possessions in the first half and failed to penetrate the Logger goal on brilliant saves from goalkeeper Memo Guerro.
"The Loggers regrouped at half time and came out looking like a different squad," stated Coach Shawn Dunas. Less than ten minutes into the second half Sophomore Zabian Morris scored the equalizer on a beautiful cross from incoming Tennessee freshman Bewar Mohammad.
The Loggers were able to control play until 12 minutes later when a Johnson County striker managed to get free and slide a ball past a diving Guerrero. With a 2-1 lead in favor of Johnson County and only two minutes left in regulation play, Bewar Mohammad served up a beautiful pass to Zabian Morris who knocked the ball back to the 6 yard box, finding LLCC sensation Harry White who headed the tying goal.
LLCC had several chances to score in over-time but were unable to find the back of the net. Six minutes into the OT, Johnson County broke away and scored the winning goal on a LLCC breakdown.
Johnson County outshot the Loggers 20-17 and had 2 more corner kicks with 11 to LLCC's 9. Coach Dunas, "I'm very proud of the boy's efforts and thought they performed well in their first match. I feel they did especially well under the conditions." Coach Dunas added-not making excuses- "the boys were on the bus at 7 am and went straight to a match to face a very tough opponent under very hot conditions… we got into our flow and took control of the game. We just couldn't get the result. Memo Guerrero came up big for us all game and kept us in the game with his 17 saves. I was very impressed with his effort!"
LLCC will play 15
