Loggers roll off 2 "W"s" in day 1 action at Grand Rapids Tourney

The Loggers traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a two day tourney.

The Loggers first took on Mott Community College at 2:00 pm. Ray Foutch started Libero for the Loggers, while Hannah Clayton started right side.

The Loggers started off strong forcing a Bears timeout at 14-9. After the time out the the Loggers rolled the score to 15-11 with a huge line swing from Isabel Hudspeth, before she went back to the service line. From the line she went on a 2 point run. Bella Powell led the Loggers with 7 kills in the first set. The Loggers took set one 25-16.

Powell started off the second set with a big swing for a kill on the right pin, followed by an ace making the score 2-2. The Loggers then trailed the Bears 8-2, forcing a Logger timeout. 

The logs battled back huge with blocks from Michels and Powell  followed by a solo block from Michels making it 11-11, forcing a Bears timeout. Loggers trailed 13-16, before an overpass kill by Middle blocker Josie Wolter. Continuing the momentum  Michels came up with a huge swing,17-18. A pair of kills from Powell made it 20-22. The Loggers fell to Mott in set two, 26-24.

The Loggers started off strong in set three with a score of 7-3. A tip kill by Michels made the score 10-5, forcing a Bear time out. Isabel Hudspeth went on a service run making it 12-6. 

A backrow kill by Michels made the score 15-7 forcing the Bears second timeout of the set. Michels followed the timeout with an ace serve. A solo block by Clayton made it 19-10, before a kill by Wolter and an ace serve by Powell making it  21-11. The Loggers took the third set, 25-14.

Setter Emily Veach started the Loggers off in set four with 2 service aces, adding to a 4-0 run from the line. An ace serve by Wolter made it 8-3. A kill by Hudspeth tallied a 9-3 lead, forcing a Bear timeout. A Michels kill out of the middle made it 10-5, before a service ace by Hudspeth making it 14-8.

A Michels kill on the slide from setter Emily Veach made it 16-8 forcing the Bear's final time out. The Loggers went on a run of points making it 22-11, before taking the fourth set 25-14, winning the match.

Emily Veach had a double double with 55 assists and 25 digs, a personal career and team high, both in assists and digs. Carly Michels finished the match with 17 kills, 1 error on 28 attempts, resulting in a hitting percentage of .571, while Josie Wolter had 12 kills out of the middle.

Outside hitter, Bella Powell had a double double with 20 kills and 18 digs.

 

The Loggers then faced Muskegon at 6:00 pm.

Starting off slow, the Loggers fell behind 10-4 to start the match. A Wolter and Veach block made it 8-11. Muskegon went on a run making it 10-18, Loggers trailing. The Loggers made a come back, but fell to Muskegon 16-25 in the opening set.

The Loggers started the second set strong, forcing Muskegon to call a timeout at 8-2. Clayton answered the time out with an ace serve, followed by a pair of aces from Hudspeth, making it 12-3. A big swing out of the middle from Michels made the score 16-13 followed by a pair of kills from Powell. A Michels and Veach block made it 22-13. Michels ace made it 24-14. A Powell killed ended the set 25-16.

Set three started off fairly even, until a Wolter ace, making it 11-9, followed by a Clayton kill. Hudspeth added a kill, 14-11. A Michels kill out of the middle made it 15-13 followed by a Michels ace, 16-13. A Powell kill forced a Muskegon timeout, 17-13. Michels service run continued with an ace, 19-13. A Powell kill from the right side made it 21-15. Hudspeth followed suit with a high line kill making it 22–15. Out of a Loggers time out, Hudspeth delivered with another kill making it 23-21. A kill by Michels gave the Loggers 24-21 followed by a Hudspeth  kill, giving the Loggers the set win, 25-21.

Set four, the Loggers started down, 3-8 to Muskegon. A Kill from Powell made it 4-8. After a Muskegon run, forcing a Loggers timeout at 11-5. The Loggers fell behind 5-14, making 10 unforced errors. Wolters and Clayton had back to back kills, 7-14. Loggers were forced to use their second timeout at 8-17. The Loggers lost set four 9-25. 

The Loggers went to set five with Muskegon, taking the final set 15-11. Kiley Schanuel stepped in as Libero and came up big for the Loggers in the back court. Emily Veach had 49 assists with 10 digs, notching another double double. Powell had 22 kills and 15 digs, adding another double double. Isabel Hudspeth had 16 digs and 11 kills while Michels added another 10 kills (.400%).

The Loggers return tomorrow to play at 10:00 am vs. Kalamazoo followed by a 12:00 pm matchup vs. Southwestern Michigan.
