An error in the top of the first sent Rick Dour across the plate to give the Loggers a quick 1-0 lead over South Florida. The one run lead wouldn't hold for long, as South Florida answered with three of their own in the bottom half. Devin Smith (1-0) was then able to settle in after a long first inning and take control of the game for the Loggers. The righty went 6 strong for the win, giving up just 3 hits and striking out 5, keeping the Loggers in the game and allowing them to take the lead after the 5th inning. Smith was relieved by freshman lefty Jay Burton, who closed out South Florida to secure the 10-9 Lincoln Land victory.
CJ Fleming and Dalton Fletcher both brought their A-game to the plate, collecting multiple hits and RBI's. Freshman catcher Andy Lopez contributed a pair of RBI's on a clutch single up the middle with the bases loaded, giving the Loggers breathing room late in the game. Scott Metzger crossed the plate a game high 3 times and also chipped in a base hit in the win.
"It's a good win for us," coach Ron Riggle said of the victory. "To get where we want to go we will have to play cleaner baseball, but being on the top end of a close ball game is always good."
The Loggers improve to 3-4 on the season and return to action Monday against Pasco Hernando.
