In game one, Devin Smith (2-2) dominated Lewis & Clark, going 7 1/3 allowing just 3 runs on 3 hits and striking out 7. Clutch defensive plays by the Logger defense sent the game into extras, where the Loggers would come out on top 4-3 in 10 innings. Brendan Hostettler made several outstanding plays, 2 of which doubled up Lewis & Clark baserunners attempting to tag up. The sophomore outfielder gunned down the tying run in the 10th inning, after making a diving play to save the winning run from scoring in the 9th. Rick Dour and Johnny Steinwart both had 2 hits in the win, and they also accounted for an RBI each.
Austin Chapman (1-3) took the mound for the Loggers in game two. The big righty went all 7, allowing 4 hits and 3 unearned runs and fanned 7 in a losing effort. The Logger offense was again nowhere to be found, until a late inning rally came up just short. The tying run was stranded on 3rd base in the bottom of the 7th, leaving the Loggers with a 3-2 loss in game two. The two runs in the inning were aided by an RBI 2B by sophomore Clay Bachman, and a sac fly by Bryar Jansen.
The Loggers drop to 9-15 (2-8 MWAC) after the split. They complete the series with Lewis & Clark Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Claude Kracik Field in Springfield.
