Lincoln Land men's basketball can't keep pace late to fall to John Wood

Lincoln Land Community College – 75
John Wood - 83

In what seems to be the Loggers' purgatory Lincoln Land could not get enough defensive stops late and let a one possession game get away from them as the fell to the Trailblazers of John Wood Community College, 83-75.

The first half saw tons of scoring in the first 7:00 of the game as after a 13-0 Logger run Lincoln Land led  29-25. Both teams settled in to their defenses and the scoring drastically slowed, but John Wood went into half up 39-37.

John Wood would push their lead out to double digits, and Lincoln Land would chip away and get the lead down to one or two possessions. Late in the game John Wood forced a Lincoln Land timeout after the Blazers took a 70-60 lead. Lincoln Land came out of the timeout and cut it down to 70-69. Teams traded buckets and with just over a minute to go the Loggers found themselves down by one 76-75. Lincoln Land was unable to get up a shot and were forced into a shot clock violation. Lincoln Land needed one stop, but were unable to get it and the Blazers knocked in a corner three to push their advantage to four points. Lincoln Land could not score in their last two attempts of the final :30 and John Wood knocked in free throws to push their lead out to the final of 83-75.

The only factor that really mattered for the game was rebounding. John Wood outrebounded Lincoln Land 31-13. In the first half John Wood pulled in 7 offensive rebounds, Lincoln Land pulled down 5 defensive rebounds. The second was slightly better, but John Wood pulled in 5 offensive rebounds to Lincoln Land's 6. It is hard for any team to win when they are outrebounded by 18.

"Yet again we put ourselves in an okay position to win. With that said, we can't get only 13 rebounds, we can't give up 83 points, we can't give up 39 points from the three point line. Even with how bad all of that sounds, we were one stop away from winning this game. We spoke at the very beginning of the year about how many games will come down to one play and tonight was a perfect example of that and we just didn't make that play. Time for moral victories is gone, its late February we have to make those plays to win." Head Coach Chad Jones commented following the loss.

Sophomore Trace Gentry led the Loggers in scoring for the second game in a row with his second 20 point plus performance with 20. Sophomore D'Aaron Owens added 17, who also had 6 assists, and freshman DJ Doolin was the other Loggers in double digits with 10.

Lincoln Land is still winless in conference at 0-7 and drops to 11-14 on the season. They will play their last home game Saturday against Danville Community College.
