Men's basketball struggles late in 64-54 loss to Parkland

Gentry led the Loggers with 5 threes for 15 points
Lincoln Land Community College – 54
Parkland Community College – 64

Same story different game for the Lincoln Land Loggers who were able to keep their MWAC game against Parkland close, however could not hold on late and eventually fell 64-54 to the Cobras.

Lincoln Land in conference play has not been able to avoid bad starts and tonight was another example of that. Lincoln Land found themselves down 13-4 after the first 9 minutes of play. Lincoln Land was able to settle into the game and after the next 10 minutes found themselves tied at 24 in the closing minutes before half. However, Lincoln Land was unable to score and Parkland got two late scores to push the halftime score to 28-24.

Although struggling offensively, Lincoln Land was happy with their defensive effort that they put in in the first half as the 28 points they surrendered was one of the lowest first half totals they had held a team to all year. The problem of slow starts reared its ugly head again for the Loggers as Parkland raced out on a 10-3 run to find themselves up their largest total of the game so far at 11. Lincoln Land responded again and went on a 8-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to 38-35. Lincoln Land was able to get as close 42-40, but never closed the gap more than 2. The dooming fact of the game was that with 6:43 left in the game and the game at 45-42, Parkland shot a total of 9 times from that point until 1:02 left in the game, Parkland pulled down 6 of those shots with offensive rebounds, and scored all 6 times. Lincoln Land secured only 3 of those missed shots. With 1:02 left and Lincoln Land needing a stop, they were unable to do so and Parkland found themselves up 8. Some missed shots and made Parkland free throws pushed the eventual final out to 64-54.

"We put ourselves in a position to win this game yet again, but can't make the plays down the stretch we need to, and they aren't based on talent. We have to make toughness plays like rebounding. This was disappointing because for so many games this year we have been right where we needed to be and can't close. We had a wide open look at 3 down 2 and missed and it went downhill from there." Coach Chad Jones stated dejectedly after the game.

Sophomore Trace Gentry found his shooting stroke knocking in 5 threes for a team high 15 points. Sophomores D'Aaron Owens had 13 and Jerrid Cosby ended with 11. Every Logger who played tonight scored.

Lincoln Land dropped to 0-5 in MWAC play and is 11-12 on the season. They will take on ICC Saturday in East Peoria for their second round of MWAC play.
