Men's Basketball gets big road win against Rend Lake, 63-57

Owens led all scorers with 17
The Lincoln Land men's basketball team travelled to Ina and knocked off the Warriors of Rend Lake 63-57.

Lincoln Land got the first bucket of the game and Rend Lake never got closer than 3 for the rest of the night. The Loggers looked very solid early as they built up a 14 point lead half way through the first half. With 6:00 to go in the half the Loggers still held firm to that lead and were shooting 68% from the field. A bucket with 1:51 left in the half allowed Lincoln Land to hold a 16 point lead, but that quickly changed. Rend Lake closed the half on a 7-0 run to put the halftime score at 34-25 LLCC.

The second half went by nearly the same script, Lincoln Land built up a 52-39 lead when freshman Nic Hagel scored on four straight possessions. Hagel knocked in 3 threes and a driving layup to score 11 points in 1:53 of game play. Lincoln Land continued to build on that lead until they led by a game high of 17 at 56-39 with 7:00 to go. Much like the first half the Warriors closed on a strong run, this time of 15-2, to cut it down to 58-54 with 1:07 to go. The run was aided mostly by Logger turnovers. Free throws down the stretch by Lincoln Land eventually sealed the deal, but Rend Lake did cut their deficit to 60-57 with :16 to go. Hagel capped his career high 15 point night with the two final free throws to seal the victory for the Loggers.

"This was a big win for our guys. It's been a long time since we've beat Rend Lake so it's very nice to put one in the win column against them. With that being said, we have to cut down turnovers, especially late in the game, if we want to continue to win basketball games. Our sophomores especially have to take better care of the ball. What got us the win tonight was the effort I've been hounding these guys to have. Our guys played hard and wanted to win." Commented Head Coach Chad Jones following the game.

Although turnovers were an issue for Lincoln Land, who committed 24, the Loggers shared the bell well getting 17 assists on 22 made field goals. Sophomore D'Aaron Owens led game in scoring with 17. Nic Hagel was the only other Loggers in double digits with 15. Freshman DJ Doolin pulled in a game high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Jacob Rueter had a team high 5 assists, while also defensively holding Rend Lake's second leading scorer to 1 point. Lincoln Land only played 8 players, all of which had at least 19 minutes of action and all scored.

Lincoln Land improved to 4-0 on the season and has a quick turn around as they play Hannibal LaGrange JV at home in Cass Gymnasium Monday evening.
