Women's Volleyball Lose Two at Kirkwood Tournament

The Lady Loggers lost the tournament opener 3-1 to Kirkwood CC followed by a loss ato Iowa Central 3-0.  The Lady Loggers were never out of any games including a loss 27-25 in game two.  Coach Jim Dietz commented on their play in the first match, "We definitely showed improvement--enough that a couple of coaches from the Dells tournament noted, "You guys are really improving" which was great.  Game two was frustrating as we led 24-22 and played like we didn't want to lose--and when you do that with a top 10 team, you pay the price.  Once it was 24-24, we were fine, then when up 25-24, we put a freeball over, they got a big kill, and then used that to pick up two more points."  Brenna Perinar had a great match and Sammie Voils hit .300 as well, leading us in kills.

Lincoln Land played a tough game one, losing to Iowa Central 27-25.  Iowa Central's All-American scored the last two points as they made great digs to enable their go-to hitter the ball.  The Loggers came back in game two and led until the wheels came off.  Leading 16-15, LLCC gave up 10 straight points to lose the game (9 consecutive unforced errors. Game three started with another five errors and seven of the first nine IC points were unforced mistakes, putting LLCC in a 9-3 hole.  That proved to be the difference as both teams sided out from there with Iowa Central eventually winning 18-25.

Coach Dietz said,  "Too many errors--mental, and physical.  The end of game two was disappointing, more so because it carried over in to the next game--and that cost us.  When you play ranked teams, you simply can't give up extended runs of unforced errors.  With that said, I want to focus on the positives of the day--the first game against these guys and the match against Kirkwood.  If we play like that consistently, we'll be fine.  Our win-loss record doesn't show it--but I think we, and fans, need to look at the toughness of our schedule--we've already played seven ranked teams, one that will be ranked, and another D-1.  We're hanging in there.  Tomorrow will be tough as we get the defending national champion and a very tough Central Nebraska team that gave Parkland (#1 in the country) fits this afternoon."
