Titusville, FL – LLCC softball beat Cloucester (2011 and 2012 DIII National Champs) 7-1 in the opening game on Wednesday, March 13
th. The Loggers then swept a doubleheader from DuPage College (10-5 and 8-0) in the twilight games of the day.
Claire Dubree (1-1) picked up the win in game one. Dubree went the distance facing 28 batters and allowing 1 run on 8 hits. She walked one batter and struck out 3. Stephanie Watkins (2-for-3) homered and doubled for the Lady Loggers.
In game two against DuPage College, the Loggers took an early lead of 5-0 going into the 6
th inning. The Chaparrals scored 1 run in the 5
th and 4 runs in the 6
th to tie the game 5-5. In the 8
th inning (tie breaker), the Loggers scored 5 runs to take the lead. Morgan Smith relieved starting pitcher Katie Lange and collected her first win of the season. Smith shut down the Chaparral bats by striking out 5 batters in 2 2/3 innings of work. “This is the best Morgan has looked on the mound this year. She was poised and performed very well in a clutch situation,” stated Coach Marsaglia.
Torey Sorensen homered and was 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs. Melinda Wilson hit her first homerun of the season and was 2-for-4 and 4 RBIs. Katie Price and Payton Billups also collected 2 hits apiece in the comeback win.
The Loggers continued to hit well in the second game of a doubleheader with DuPage College. The Loggers collected 10 hits to only 3 hits for DuPage. Payton Billups hit her second homerun of the year. Billups was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Lauren Windisch and Kayla Jacobs contributed with 2 hits each. The Loggers won 8-0 in 5 innings.
Freshman pitcher Whitley Baker (1-1) went the distance to get her first win. Baker shut out the Chaparrals allowing only 3 hits and striking out 6 batters.
