He was a seven-time State Junior College Champion in track and cross country. In 1975, he was named two-time All-American in track and All-American in cross country. He continued his education and running at California Polytechnic State. He was named Cross Country All-American and was captain of the NJCAA II Cross Country (1978) and Track (1979) championship teams. He served as an assistant track and cross country coach several years before being named the head coach in 1986 for both sports at Kansas State University. In 1987, he was voted Kansas Coach of the Year.
