Joe was a member of the Lincoln Land Community College Loggers baseball team for 2 years.  He won  11 games as a starting pitcher and earned five saves as a relief pitcher.  He pitched 112 innings and struck out 101 batters.  While at the University of New Orleans, he was a member of the silver medal winning United States team at the Pan American games in 1987.  He was also a member of the USA baseball team that won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.  After completing his undergraduate degree at New Orleans, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics.
