He was a five time track and cross country All-American. He was a national champion in the six-mile run in 1974 with a record time. He placed fifth at the national cross country meet as a freshman and was a member of the track team placing third in the nation. He competed in numerous road races. He won the Cleveland Heart-A-Thon, a 13.1-mile race with over 2,000 runners in 1983.
